North River Outing - March 2011

The best and worst of times. It rained cats and dogs in the Mountains this time, but we caught fish, visited like the best of buddies, and ate like kings. And we had a great turnout. Someone said there were 30 folks there, or somewhere in that neighborhood. And a special KUDOS to the club members who slaved over their hot cast iron pots and skillets and absolutely fabulous ice cream machines to keep us happy and warm while our tents and the earth below our feet got soaked and nasty.

Entomology Class - October 1, 2011
(29 Photos, 0 Comments : Last updated 12/4/2011)

This class is for anyone interested in expanding their knowledge of aquatic insect life. In this class students learned the life cycles, habits, size and shapes of the insects fish feed on. They also learned how to identify insects and then choose the fly that most closely matches a particular insect and its stage in its life cycle. This class definitely helped make each student's time on the water more enjoyable and productive.

Local guide, Steve Nix, of Fly South in Nashville taught the class on the Caney Fork River, beginning just below Center Hill dam. Throughout the day, Steve moved the class further and further down stream. This gave the class an opportunity to witness the variations in aquatic life from one section of river to the next. We hope everyone who attended had a great time!

Caney Fork River Outing - October 2011

This particular outing had a slightly different twist. We had nine Wounded Warriors join us from three regional “Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing” (PHWFF) groups around Tennessee and Kentucky. They joined us for two great days on the river and in the campground. Words cannot express what an honor it is to be able to give back to these brave men and women that are in-part responsible for the freedoms we enjoy and the ability to be outdoors when we want to be. Fly fishing gives recovering soldiers and veterans a chance to forget about their challenges and enjoy life’s little pleasures surrounded by nature.

Several local guides and MTFF members volunteered to float the Warriors in their drift boats while other members assisted a few while wading the upper section of the river. We all had a wonderful weekend teaching the newer PHWFF members how to cast a fly rod and working with each of them on the water.

This trip to the GSMNP was scheduled over Memorial Day weekend and members camped in Group Site 01 at Elkmont. The weather began very mild and beautiful but quickly became hotter and hotter each day. The fishing on the lower Little River was slightly on the slow side even though there prolific hatches of many species of insect every evening. The brook trout fishing on this outing was excellent throughout the park.
